Charles Tallack graduated from Imperial College of Science and Technology, University of London in 1987 with an Honours degree in Aeronautical Engineering. During this time he specialised in industrial applications of fluid and thermodynamics and structural analysis, before being engaged by GEC Turbine Generators Ltd in Rugby as a trainee engineer.
In the following years Charles became involved in all aspects of steam turbine design and manufacture as part of the Professional Engineer Formation programme, joining the Institution of Mechanical Engineers as an Associate Member. During this period the merger with Alsthom of France led to direct involvement in much interesting work, analysing and developing new turbine configurations from the two former competitors' designs.
In 1990 Charles moved to Cambridge and joined Mackays of Cambridge Ltd, a small but locally renowned business providing sub-contract heavy fabrication and machining services to many of the high-tech manufacturers in the area. After experience as assistant manager of the engineering division and manager of the machine shop, Charles took on the position of General Manager in 1999 just after the relocation of the division to its current 13,000 sq.ft premises, and introduced accreditation to ISO9001, CAD design and a bespoke computerised production control system amongst other developments.
In 2003 Charles left Mackay Engineering to join Allan Baldry & Associates as a consulting structural engineer, prior to Allan's planned retirement and transfer of the practice which then became Charles Tallack Engineering Consultancy in October 2003. Chartered Engineer status was achieved in early 2004 with full membership of the IMechE.
Charles is an Ambassador for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics with involvement in schools and colleges, promoting activities to stimulate interest in these topics and related career choices for young people, and is a parent governor at a local primary school. From early years, his vocation for engineering and design was fostered by his grandfather Charles Keith Tallack OBE, MICE, who was County Surveyor for Lincolnshire County Council, and by the Mackay family where the ironmongery shop and engineering works were the source of much valuable practical experience.
